Team Saxo Bank's Jonathan Bellis was badly injured while preparing for the World Championships with the British U-23 squad. He apparently crashed on a scooter.
He is currently in a coma at the hospital in Firenze.

A real talent. Always sad to hear such stories, and sadly very little news at the moment. Here's to hoping for a swift and full recovery

Hope he gets back on his feet without too many long-lasting problems. Sounds awful!

Very little news. The latest press statement says that his condition is stable, but he is still being kept in coma. The extent and type of injuries he has suffered have not been divulged to the press, but given the decision to keep him in a coma, one can obviously deduce that they must be quite serious.

Bellis hopes to be back in competition for the UK championship in June, after which he should return to a "regular" race schedule.
A month in coma, six months in hospital, and nine months out of competition is the deficit after his scooter crash. He lost 24kg of body weight during the experience (mostly recovered now). He thanks his family, his friends (naming Cavendish), and the Saxobank leadership for their support of both himself and his family during the ordeal.

Haven't heard anything in a while, but my understanding is that Saul is more or less fully recovered for "ordinary" life but for medial reasons has retired from pro racing - risk of crashing is too great. I think he still does some triathlons on a "just for fun" basis.
