Samples from the 2008 Giro d'Italia were due to be retested for the blood booster CERA after the subsequent high-profile doping positives of several top riders who participated in the event. Yet there has been no news on the retests since the Italian police seized the urine samples this May. Now the UCI has indicated that if those authorities don’t retest the samples, it will try to do so.

"The Italian police have the samples. We tried to get them but can’t do so," said UCI President Pat McQuaid on Wednesday. "We would be interested in testing them but haven’t been able to access them. If we get them back, we will carry out the examinations."

The 2008 Giro d’Italia took place several weeks before that year’s Tour was plunged into controversy, when riders such as Riccardo Riccò, Stefan Schumacher, Leonard Piepoli and Bernhard Kohl competed with the assistance of CERA and ultimately tested positive.

At the time it was claimed that CERA was new to the peloton but, as Cyclingnews reported last December, the product was most likely in use long before that. It was approved for public use in July 2007 and was said by Spanish media to have been seized during the Operación Puerto raids over a year earlier.

Riccò finished the Giro d'Italia in second place behind Spaniard Alberto Contador in May, 2008, then two months later tested positive for CERA. He claimed to have only used it in preparation for the Tour de France, but many have questioned the claims that he and Emanuele Sella competed clean in that Tour of Italy. Sella won three stages and the mountains classification, but then tested positive for CERA in July 2008.

Has McQuaid just received some additional funding to undertake these re-tests? wink.gif

This is actually an old news. The only news is the UCI reactions.

Italian media reported several times, that the public prosecutor of Padova is pushing the issue.

That news is the funny part.

Why would McQuaid all of the sudden actually be interested in testing samples? dur.gif

What kind of statement is this:
"If we get them back, we will carry out the examinations"

Right.

Dave.

All I can say is, I hope Contador's contract negotiations are going well.

Has anyone updated the ex-list recently?

(the AAF list for ex-JB/LA riders... Tyler, Floyd... Frankie gets honorable mention because he honorably admitted.)

Basso, Hamilton...

This reminds me of a certain someone who won 7 straight TdFs while all those around him got busted for doping.

I really wonder, is there anyone out there who really thinks there's been a clean winner of the Tour during the last say, 20 years?

Of any Grand Tour?

I still hold out hope that Sastre was clean last year.

A grab-bag of doping updates from Velo News:

http://velonews.com/article/99668/doping-s...le-re-tests-and

"Earlier efforts to back-test Giro samples for CERA were squashed by the UCI, but now Italian officials in Padua have taken up the case. "

Did the UCI want the re-tests or did it not?

And CN weighs in with news of "six to seven positives".

Perhaps it is because this is Halloween eve, but this is very funny. Shall we expect the next UCI Trick or Treat salvo to be along the lines of - 'We know of three other sport federations that are upset with the Italian police doping investigations'.

On the humor note, you didn't mention the Fuentes twist in the Velonews piece.

Fuentes wins back pay

In another bizarre twist in the Fuentes story, the controversial Spanish doctor won a court decision this week awarding him nearly $1 million in back-pay owed by the former team Kelme.

A court in Valencia awarded Fuentes 600,000 euros for unpaid wages he was due while employed by the team from 2003-06. An appeal is likely.
Shouldn't the Spanish IRS be going after him for tax evasion on Tyler's payments? At least if Kelme pays up, Fuentes should be able to cover any tax liability.

why would conti be worried? why would any hog rider be worried?

The report also outlined a new blood doping practice which evaded current testing protocol which monitor blood parameters. About 200ml of blood is extracted, mixed with an anti-coagulant, and re-injected. The practice does not alter blood values and is all but undetectable, the report said.

new blood doping method

to think that ferrari isn't already years ahead of even this latest is to completely misunderstand why armstrong felt assured and safe coming back.

actovegin is in fact just that -- an anti-coagulant.

but that's so old school. dr. ferrari-stein had that going in 2001 just as the (albeit limited) epo test came into effect and threatened messing with his monster's epo-derived success.

god knows what he's on to now.

Thanks Maya.

I had wondered about 'micro-transfusing'.

RH, if you are reading, any comment on the practicality or possible advantage of this?

So the anti-coagulant is what helps? Like is reduces the friction of your blood against vessels or something?

Can I buy a vowel?

Never believed the Actovegin excuse, nor the diabetic driver nonsense. But, what is the most likely benefit here?

Lower friction for high HCT and/or re-infused blood? Or what?

Our blood experts must be on sabbatical.
