For those who do not know Stephanie used to be Lances Oakley liaison. She was also in the Hospital room when Lance admitted doping. On this tape she says "I was in that room, I heard it". Her discussion on the tape is much different then her testimony in the SCA case. It appears her concern for her job and the ability to care for her autistic son overwhelmed her desire to tell the truth.
By this time most people's minds are made up. Those that think that Lance doped and that the evidence is overwhelming will just see this as further evidence. Those that are gullible enough to think that Lance was clean will just ignore what is said.....most will point fingers at Greg or Stephanie and say they are bitter. I am sure some will make the "Old News" excuse. The conversation took place in 2004 and was done in a one party authorization state so it is legal. Edit: It appears I was not able to upload the file to the forum so here is a link http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=jx4cxh01ftb enter the code on the mid right hand side of the page You can also Download it here http://www.4shared.com/file/24532391/fe77b775/gregstef.html This post has been edited by EvaMariaB: Sep 18 2007, 07:33 PM |

...and they're off!
Lancer breaks for the lead followed closely by Rumormill and Inuendo! As they break for the turn it's Baited Hook by a nose and Grand Inquistor moving up strong on the inside! Around and into the back straight it looks like National Pride is making a bid for the lead with Loose Lips biting hard at the bit! False Testimony is deposed near the rear! Into the clubhouse turn it's still Lancer, despite all odds! Fish Wrap Hack is responding to the whip and pulls alongside as they head for the post! The bunch 'rounds the turn and down the straight they roar! High Times wobbles!...Lancer puts his head down!...Suppressed Evidence trails by three lengths!...Tabloid Girl pounds up along the rail! Who's it gonna be at the wire?!?!? This post has been edited by CAMPYBOB: Sep 18 2007, 07:41 PM |

The tape certainly isn't good for Lance. There's little doubt Stephanie claimed to have heard the "admission." And there's little reason to believe she wasn't telling the truth to Greg. Much more credible than Betsy.
At the same time, however, the tape is not very flattering to Greg. Greg comes across as a whiny puss. When told that Stephanie is working for Lance, Greg feigns surprise, "Oh you are? Really!" You have to listen to get how phoney it sounds. Greg also outright lies to her when he promises that their conversation "won't be repeated" and that she's not being taped. (And he's indignant that Landis repreated when he now claims to have been a confidential conversation.) I also found interesting that he started the conversation talking about the problems he was currently having with his father. Is this his modus operandi to get people to open up to him? So, while this is damaging to Lance, it's also damaging to Lemond. He's an ass for recording the conversation and an ass for releasing it. Aa angry as Stephanie appears to be at Lance in the recording, I suspect that pales in comparison to her anger at Lemond for having recorded and released it. Much more credible than Betsy. She sounded like she was feeding Greg what he wanted to hear. She answers the phone "greg la hoo????". Seems like they've had a chance to get to know each other fairly well prior to the call. The crappy recording adds to the unrehearsed effect. I'd conclude she was fi$hing as much as he was.At the same time, however, the tape is not very flattering to Greg. Greg comes across as a whiny puss. That download link invoked numerous popups and an application offering to clean my system. The 2nd link worked fine for me, the first one had pop ups Greg certainly does not come across as a skilled negotiator/interrogator. At the same time it is pretty clear that she lied, either in the courtroom on the phone call with Greg. As there were 2 other witnesses that confirmed what was said in the hospital room I would think that she was telling the truth when she talked with Greg. it appears that Lance also lied in the courtroom....or did he use the "I do not recall" excuse? ...and they're off! IIRC, Startt testified in the SCA case that McIlvain told him what she told Lemond on that tape, as well, so it's not simply a case of McIlvain vs Lemond's credibility. Clearly she lied in her deposition.
btw, what do you suppose she meant when she said that she'd be unwilling to testify unless subpoened because of her loyalty to Oakley? I thought that a little odd - was she worried that Oakley would frown on her testifying against Armstrong? This post has been edited by Velo: Sep 18 2007, 10:24 PM |

Some questions:
1. Has this tape been in the public domain before? 2. If not, should we expect major media to start running with this story shortly? 3. Is this the first salvo in a new offensive ('ElizaB' did say, watch this space)? |

what an entire piece of crap the recording is. I think both parties are drama queens. Thank goodness I do not depend on either person to keep information confidential. Tired ass #### and the toilet needs to be flushed.

I'd venture that getting kicked out of the Club of Lance could end your livelihood in a heartbeat. It wouldn't be the first time that we heard of Lance's career-ending powers. Nasty stuff, all of it. Is this the first salvo in a new offensive ('ElizaB' did say, watch this space)? This tape was discussed in From Lance to Landis. It may not have been in the public domain before, but anyone who was interested enough to follow the case would have been aware of it, so I don’t know if this signals some kind of new offensive. I wonder too, though, why anyone would think Stephanie was more credible than Betsy. She can speak for herself, but in the book the argument that she simply hated Lance was pretty effectively rebutted. She and Lance were on very good terms at the time. OAR, if you fault Stephanie for leaking confidential information, isn't that an admission of the truth of what she's saying? |

Alanshearer, what do you mean much more credible than me? Good question. Either the mods are invoking the 'public person' interpretation of you, or what Alan meant was that this would be corroboration of what has been said previously, and comes direct from the speaker's mouth. That you said she said that is not as credible as hearing her actually say it. I'm going to assume that Alan meant what I have stated. Dave. -------------------- Lance Led, Floyd Followed.

Thanks for making that point julich. I was thinking that today about the "hate" excuse. In his deposition, lance says he doesn't know me. Then he says I "hate" him. Which doesn't make sense. Surely had I known how much I hated him I wouldn't have done him the honor (yes, my cooking is good) of making him dinner more than a few times. Austin Murphy, SI, is the only one who really called him out on that. That was his only defense and it was weak.
I don't believe this conversation has been in the public domain before. Kathy and Greg told me they didn't tape Greg's conversation with Stephanie because they feared I would tell her. I only found out about this tape after Stephanie's deposition and was upset she didn't tell the truth about the hospital incident because she left us out to dry. Velo, very good point about Startt's testimony as well. Yes, she and her husband's jobs at Oakley were threatened if she made "the company look bad" in her depostion. Greg was threatened with his livlihood as well (due to the Ferrari remarks) and taped. Thank goodness he did. When you're dealing with people who work with unethical people, you have to look at options to protect yourself. Just as, thank goodness, Frankie taped his conversation with Bill Stapleton.
