Stage 9: More mountains

Not a mountaintop finish, but the last 1400m go uphill at 6%. It's not unlike Stage 3. If the GC guys come over the last climb together, there could still be 5-10 second gaps, but this looks to me more like a breakaway stage than one for a GC battle. There are a lot of climbs (7), but none of them are very hard, at least for the climbers.

No surprise that Moncoutie is in the break again with all those mountain points on order. He showed a lot of patience yesterday in winning the stage. He didn't bother sprinting for 1st place on the earlier climbs of the day (instead letting the Xacobeo mountain leader burn his matches on those sprints). So he still had it in him to make a great attack on the last cat 1 climb and then hold on for the win. Now why does Moncoutie always seem to come on strong in the Vuelta and not his home race of Le Tour.
