Time to start a thread about Olympic track stuff, any bits and pieces, such as this article by Wiggins, "I'm right where I want to be, three weeks from Beijing" - in contrast to 4 years ago:

it's all about the individual pursuit race, only mentions Cavendish and the Madison briefly at the very end - thus can tell where his priority is, presumably.

What is meatball going to ride?

What are the odds on Phinney in the pursuit.
The US media hype has started already--not Phelps style but enough.

UK media are trying to actually play down our chances by suggesting that there is no way no can replicate the domination of the World Championships. Although Chris Hoy is blogging that he has already set some personal bests in practice.

He was tipped to be our flag bearer, but this honour has gone to swimmer Mark Foster.

Or perhaps the relative importance of the madison I think. It doesn't ave the prestige of the pursuit events for sure.
Inspired by Oncearunner I now provide a running total of overall Australian success in the three grand tours: 0+1+0.

Are most of the people responding in this thread in the UK?

Does anyone know what time the road race and time trials will be broadcast here in the US? Unfortunately my wife and I have to move our younger daughter up to college this weekend. But if I know when they are broadcasting I can record them.

Not sure if they will be broadcasting live but on in the UK from 4am to 10.30am. Just subtract a few hours...

They list most of the cycling stuff in 12 hour blocks of time, so have a lot of hard drive space available on your DVR.

The cool thing is, they're posting entire events afterward. So, if you miss it live, you should be able to pick it up later. The entire road race is available (6.5 hours).

That's cool.

Question: what is generally the "premier" track event? Sounds like the pursuits.

I always liked the team persuit and the sprints. The madison and keiren don't interest me much, but I'll watch.

Hell yes. Shame the IOC don't agree.

I write with a stupid problem: The NBC website, at least so far as I can tell, won't access anything about track cycling? I've been through their schedules and results button, video, live, rewind, reboot, bootjack, buttons, but can't seem to find anything beyond "explanations" of keirin and points races. They also had nothing about the kilo...

This is more frustrating than the paper version of l'annee philologique.

Anybody who's found anything re: US TV or online distribution of track footage (especially keirin!), please feel free to post direct links for those of us to stupid to figure out NBC's website!

They have nothing about the kilo because it isn't an olympic event, which if you read between the lines is what Steve, Burkin, and The Rake were complaining about above.

If you are looking for TV coverage of track, the first listed is tomorrow 8:00am to 10:00am Eastern US time on USA network. If you put in Cycling on the drop down box of the TV schedule it will show. Even though the synopsis doesn't show cycling, I think if they show the block they have some coverage planned. The first coverage on the main NBC station is Saturday 10:00 Eastern time, on will of course be about Minney Phinney.

Huff...Well, thanks all for the advice...but...I went back to the NBC site and now, via the exact same search path, I find the schedule for the team sprints and pursuit tomorrow. Either NBC read my post and fixed something, or some wacky Apple/microsoft glitch thing was going on.

Joking aside about the kilo, it'd be cool to see in Beijing. If swimming can have the 50, the 100, and the 200 free, why can't cycling have the kilo? Little distance changes and the like make a BIG difference to the athletic talents required for success (e.g. I was OK at the 50 in high school, but absolutely swam like someone drowning in the 100 free. Ironically for a runner, I had zero kick, so the arms just died. My coach never made me swim the fly events, 'cause that would have just been embarassing)

It wasn't you, none of the track events were on the results & schedule page until sometime today. The TV schedule page has always had them, but descriptions have changed about three times for the same time slot, but they always would show something happening in cycling at that time slot.

Now the track program has started in earnest, and Team GB is already on fire with the Gold in the men's team sprint, and Olympic record for Bradley Wiggins in the pursuit, an exceptional ride from Stephen Burke in the same, and the top two qualifiers in the women's pursuit.

We could be in for a cracking weekend!!

Well done also to Minney Phinney for posting seventh best time at his tender age. One for 2012
